    <abstract locale="en_US">There is a great concern about the effect of propoxur, as one of the more common N-methyl carbamate pesticides, on human health due to its extensive use in agricultural and non-agricultural applications. Caco-2 cells became resistant to propoxur, and the resistance was confirmed through MTT assay. Then the cell membrane integrity and P-glycoprotein expression were measured by LDH assay and western blot analysis, respectively and compared to the parent cells.&#xA0; Contrary to what was expected, the expression of P-glycoprotein in propoxur resistant cells was lower than parent cells.This study indicates that the resistance to propoxur may not be related to P-glycoprotein expression directly, since P-glycoprotein expression has decreased in these cells.</abstract>

    <title locale="en_US">Melatonin Decreases Olanzapine Induced Metabolic Side-Effects in Adolescents with Bipolar Disorder: a Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial</title>

    <abstract locale="en_US">Olanzapine is the frequently prescribed drug in children and adolescents with bipolar disorder, but unfortunately it has metabolic side-effects. On the other hand, in a number of melatonin studies on sleep cycle, regulation of metabolic abnormalities has been reported. Therefore, we aimed to study effects of melatonin in reducing metabolic side-effects of olanzapine in 11-17 year-old patients with bipolar disorder. Seventy-seven 11-17 year-old outpatients entered into the study after their initial diagnosis of bipolar mood disorder by a psychiatrist. After assessing inclusion and exclusion criteria, 48 patients consented to participate in the study. Of this number, 24 patients were allocated to olanzapine, lithium carbonate, and melatonin and 24 patients were allocated to olanzapine, lithium carbonate, and placebo. Young mania rating scale was performed at baseline. Before treatment initiation and at sixth and twelfth weeks after treatment, Lipid profile, Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) and Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP) were measured. ANOVA with repeated measure and independent sample t-test were used for data analysis. Nineteen patients in each group completed the study and yielded data for analysis.&#xA0; ANOVA with repeated measure showed that FBS and Triglyceride (TG) (especially in boys) demonstrated greater increase in the placebo group compared to the melatonin group but the differences were not statistically significant. Melatonin significantly inhibited the rise in Total Cholesterol levels compared to placebo (P=0.032). Mean SBP rose more slowly in the melatonin group (1.05mmHg) compared to placebo (6.36 mmHg) (P=0.023). The trends in DBP did not show any significant pattern. Administration of melatonin along with olanzapine and lithium carbonate could significantly inhibit the rise in cholesterol level and SBP compared to placebo. The effect of melatonin on TG was more obvious in boys. Melatonin was more effective in prevention of SBP rise.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">Hepatitis C Virus is one of the main reasons for chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Combination therapy with Interferon (peg-IFN-&#x3B1;) and Ribavirin (RBV) clear the virus more likely than the others. Different factors like virus and host characteristics influence on response to treatment. The most important viral factors include virus genotype and viral load; host factors like genetic, gender, race, age, weight and liver enzymes are also important. Previous studies have shown that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IFNR genes can regulate and influence on treatment with IFN. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between SNPs in IFN-&#x3B1; receptor (IFNAR1 &amp; IFNAR2) genes among subjects affected with chronic hepatitis C, who have treated with IFN and RBV, and also relationship between HCV genotypes and response to combination antiviral therapy.&#xA0;Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were taken from whole blood of 61 patients affected with chronic hepatitis C who were treated with IFN and Ribavirin. Then, DNA was extracted from PBMCs and quality of DNA was assessed with Nanodrop finally two SNPs [Ex4-30G&gt;C] and [Ivs1-4640 G&gt;A] of IFN receptor genes (IFNAR1 and IFNAR2) were measured by TaqMan Real-Time PCR in ABi Prism 7900 system. Also to confirm the response rate to therapy, RNA was extracted then RT PCR was performed and final product was studied with gel electrophoresis and UV spectroscopy. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 18.0 for Windows. The analysis of results from TaqMan SNP Genotyping has been shown that two SNPs (Ex4-30G&gt;C and Ivs1-4640 G&gt;A) of IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 didn't show any relationship with response to combined therapy in subjects affected with chronic hepatitis C who have treated with peg-IFN-&#x3B1; and Ribavirin. 61 patients complete the treatment period. 54 patients (%88/5) of them responded to treatment and 7 patients (%11/5) did not. Research and data analysis have shown that there is no significant relationship between sex (P=0 /7) and age (P=0 /2). But there is a relationship between genotype-3a and response to combined therapy of IFN-&#x3B1; and RBV (0/02).&#xA0;Studies have shown that gene polymorphisms in IVSS1-22G location of IFNAR1 gene had a relationship with IFN treatment response. But current study has shown that there is no significant relationship between two SNPs Ex4-30G&gt;C and Ivs1-4640 G&gt;A and response to IFN therapy. In continue we suggest that it would be better to use this technique to evaluate other SNPs in IFN genes.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disease that occurs most often between the second and fourth decade of life. Patients have been reported during the first months of life and after 70 years. Our objective was to determine the clinical, paraclinical and genetic characteristics of BD in patients aged &lt; 20 and &gt; 40 years. We conducted a comparative retrospective study including patients with BD (Criteria of International Study Group on BD). Patients were divided into two groups: those &lt; 20 years (Group one) and those &gt; 40 years (Group two). The clinical, paraclinical and genetic (HLA) characteristics were determined and compared in the two groups. The data were compiled and analyzed using SPSS 11.0.&#xA0;Thirty totals of 430 patients were included. Group one included 81 patients (55 men and 26 women). Group two included 68 patients (45 men and 23 women). Cutaneous involvement (88.9 versus 76.5%; P=0.043), pseudofolliculitis (84 versus 64.5%; P=0.004) and vena cava thrombosis (11.11 vs 0%; P=0.004) were significantly more frequent in group one while joint involvements were more common in group two (57.4 versus 40.7%; P= 0.043). The frequency of erythema nodosum as well as ocular, vascular and neurological disorders was comparable between the two groups. Few studies in the literature have compared the clinical, paraclinical and genetic characteristics of BD, who had first symptom onset after 40 years of age. Late-onset BD, usually, affects both genders equally. According to present results, the frequency of severe organ involvement is equal regardless of age, except for vena cava thrombosis.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">One of the most preventable causes of mental and growth retardation is congenital hypothyroidism (CH). This study tries to investigate growth and mental outcome of patients with CH. Since November 2006 and November 2007 in Guilan province, north of Iran, all neonates who were diagnosed with CH, evaluated for etiology of CH by laboratory follow up, thyroid sonography or scan. Growth and development of patients with CH were compared with healthy children in same age, geographical area, social and economical classes in four years old. Demographic characteristics including height, weight, and head circumference at birth, follow up time (four years old) and IQ (Good enough test) were recorded in questionnaires. Among 28904 screened neonates, 37 patients with CH were diagnosed. Incidence of CH was 1:781 in live births, 20 (54%) in female neonates and 17 (46%) in male neonates. The incidences of permanent and transient hypothyroidism were 43.2% (16 cases) and 56. 8% (21 cases) respectively. The incidence of permanent and transient hypothyroidism were 16 (43.2%) and 21 (56, 8%), respectively. In permanent CH, 11 cases (%.68.2) had dyshormonogenesis and 5 cases (%.31.2) had thyroid dysgenesis. Significant statistical difference was only in family history of thyroid disease (34, 3% Positive family history in CH vs. 13.2% in control group, P-value 0.03). All other demographic characteristics and IQ had no statistical difference. Patients with CH diagnosed through neonatal screening and treated had normal growth as general population that indicates effective screening program and treatment in this area (3.2%).</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">One of the main objectives of quantitative researches is assessment of models developed by qualitative studies. Models validation through their testing implies that the designed model is representative of the existed facts. Hence, this study was conducted to assess the clinical nurses' productivity model presented for Iranian nurses' productivity. The sample of the study consisted of 360 nurses of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The research tool was a questionnaire for measuring the components of clinical nurses' productivity. After completing all steps of instrument psychometric and getting answers from the participants, the factors introduced in the questionnaire were named and then Lisrel Path Analysis tests were performed to analyze the components of the model. The results of the model test revealed there is an internal relationship among different anthocyanin derivative, is an estrogen receptor agonist with little estrogen side effects. This study was designed to assess Pel memory enhancing effects on the a rat Amyloid Beta25-35 (A&#x3B2;) intrahippocampal microinjections model of AD in the passive avoidance task performance paradigm and further evaluate the potential estrogen receptor role on the memory-evoking compound. Equally divided rats were assigned to 5 groups of sham, A&#x3B2; intrahippocampal microinjected, Pel pretreated (10 mg/kg; P.O), &#x3B1; estrogen antagonist intra-cerebrovascular (i.c.v.) microinjected, and &#x3B2; estrogen antagonist (i.c.v) microinjected animals. Intrahippocampal microinjections of A&#x3B2; were adopted to provoke AD model. Passive avoidance task test was also used to assess memory performance. Pel pretreatment prior to A&#x3B2; microinjections significantly improved step-through latency (P&lt;0.001) in passive avoidance test. In &#x3B1; and &#x3B2; estrogen, antagonists received animals, passive avoidance task performance was not statistically changed (P=0.11 &amp; P=0.41 respectively) compared to Pel pretreated and sham animals. Our results depicted that Pel improves A&#x3B2; induced memory dysfunction in passive avoidance test performance through estrogen receptor independently related pathways.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">The ultimate goal of the periodontal treatments is a regeneration of periodontium. Recently, laser irradiations are commonly used to improve wound repair. Because of many controversies about the effects of laser on soft tissue regeneration, more in vitro studies are still needed. The aim of the present in vitro study was to compare the effects of different doses of Er:YAG (erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, garnet) and Er, Cr:YSGG (erbium, chromium-doped: yttrium, scandium, gallium, garnet) laser treatment on human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) proliferation. In this randomized single-blind controlled in vitro trial, HGF cells were irradiated using Er:YAG and Er, Cr:YSGG laser for 10 and 30 seconds or remained unexposed as a control group. After a culture period of 24 and 48 hours, HGF cell proliferation was evaluated by MTT assay. The data were subjected to one-sided analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparison tests. Our results showed Er:YAG application for 10 and 30 seconds as well as Er, Cr:YSGG irradiation for 10 and 30 seconds induced statistically significant (P&lt;0.05) proliferation of HGF cells as compared with the control at 24 hours up to 18.39%, 26.22%, 21.21%, and 17.06% respectively. In 48 hour incubations, Er:YAG and Er, Cr:YSGG irradiation for 10 and 30 seconds significantly increased cellular proliferation up to 22.9%, 32.24%, 30.52% and 30.02% respectively (P&lt;0.05). This study demonstrates that Er:YAG and Er, Cr:YSGG laser significantly increased HGF cell proliferation compared to the control specimens. This higher proliferation can lead to increased wound repair in clinical conditions.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">Ischemia-reperfusion injury is the tissue damage happened when blood supply returns to the tissue after a period of ischemia or shortage of oxygen. This brain injury initiates an inflammatory response involving the expression of adhesion molecules and cytokines. The aim of this study is investigating the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of&#xA0;Cyperus rotundus L. on the expression of the Bcl-x1 antiapoptotic gene in rats&#x2019; hippocampus tissue following global ischemic-reperfusion injury. In the present study, attempts were made to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of&#xA0;Cyprus rotundus L. on the expression of the Bcl-x1 antiapoptotic gene in rats&#x2019; hippocampus tissue following global ischemic-reperfusion. To this end, eighteen male Wistar rats (250-300 g body wt) were used in this study. The animals were divided into three classes, each including 6 rats, I: Control class without ischemia-reperfusion, II: Ischemia-reperfusion class that was subjected to all surgical procedures, III: extract injection class that received Cyperus rotundus L. after ischemia. Seventy two hours after ischemia-reperfusion, the hippocampus was derived for studying the changes in bcl-xl gene expression. Q real-time PCR was employed for the detection of bcl-xl gene expression in ischemia and extract groups, and then their results were compared with normal samples. The results showed the generations of 0.6233, 0.23, and 0.9933 for control, ischemia, and ischemic extract groups, respectively. Moreover, it was found that the bcl-xl gene expression declined in ischemia group as compared to the extract group. A significant difference in the bcl-xl gene expression was observed in ischemia group when compared with the groups which had both injection and ischemia. These findings are consistent with anti-apoptotic properties of the bcl-xl gene. It can be concluded that this method creates a powerful tool for the investigators to study brain ischemia and the responses to the treatment which are caused by the injection of Cyprus rotundus L.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">Anxiety may negatively affect the course of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to assess which factors are associated with anxiety in young adults with CAD. A cohort of individuals with premature coronary artery disease was formed between 2004-2011, as the Tehran Heart Center's Premature Coronary Atherosclerosis Cohort (THC-PAC) study. Patients (men&#x2264;45-year-old, and women&#x2264;55-year-old) were visited between March 2013 and February 2014. All participants were examined, and their demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected. Then, all participants filled in the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Logistic regression models were used to identifying factors related to anxiety in both sexes. During the study, 708 patients (mean [SD] age: 45.3 [5.8] y, men:48.2%) were visited. Anxiety was present in 53.0% of participants (66.0% of women and 39.0% of men). The logistic regressions model showed that the associated factors for anxiety in men were opium usage (OR=1.89, 95% CI: 1.09-3.27), positive family history (OR=1.49, 95% CI:0.94-2.35), and creatinine serum level (OR=1.17, 95% CI:1.05-1.303); and in women were major adverse cardiac events (MACE) during follow-up (OR=2.30, 95% CI:1.25-4.23), hypertension (OR=1.71, 95% CI:1.07-2.73) and the duration of CAD (OR=0.99, 95% CI:0.98-1.00). In premature CAD patients, the determinants of anxiety seem to be different in each sex. Opium usage, positive family history of CAD, and creatinine serum levels in men, and MACE, hypertension, and duration of CAD in women appear the relevant factors in this regard.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between each parent&#x2019;s Body Mass Index (BMI) and maternal age with weight status of children. This was an analytic cross-sectional study which was conducted on 12-year-old students from different areas in Rasht, north part of Iran. The checklist included demographic characteristics such as age, maternal age during childbirth, student and maternal height and weight, child rank. Data were analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis, paired t-test and ANOVA test and chi-square in SPSS software 19.0. A P-value less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. A total of 200 adolescents participated in this study consisted of 106 (53%) boys. Results showed a significant correlation between students&#x2019; BMI and parental BMI and father&#x2019;s weight. Also, there was a significant correlation between students&#x2019; weight with parental BMI and father&#x2019;s weight, and birth rankIn conclusion, the role of the family in changing nutritional habits of children must be considered because through parental education and changing their perceptions we can prevent obesity.</abstract>

    <abstract locale="en_US">Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease, which affects many organs as it impairs chloride channel. This study was performed to evaluate growth status and its relationship with some laboratory indices such as Cholesterol (chol), Triglyceride (TG), albumin and total protein in children with CF referred to pediatrics center. This study was designed as a cross-sectional study in one year section. Demographic features were compared with standard percentiles curves. Chol, TG, albumin, total protein, prothrombin time, and hemoglobin were measured. Stool exams were also performed. A questionnaire was designed to obtain a history of the first presentation of disease, birth weight, type of labor and parent relativity. In 52% of patients, failure to thrive (FTT) was the first presentation. Steatorrhea and respiratory infections were the first presentations, which were seen in 13.7% and 33% of the cases, respectively. The weight of 88% of patients was below the 15th percentile while 82% had a height percentile below 15th. Head circumference in 53% of patients was below the 15th percentile. There was a significant association between weight percentile and serum albumin and total protein (P=0.03 and P=0.007, respectively). There was also a significant relationship between height percentile and serum albumin and total protein (P&lt;0.001 and P&lt;0.000, respectively).
