Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia was studied in a 46 year old Iranian male with anemia, bleeding, ecchymose and splenomegaly. The diagnosis of Macroglobulinemia was established by the presence of veryhigh level of IgM paraprotein in sera which was detectable by imrnunoelectrophoresis and rocket immunoelectrophoresis, and by the presence of bone marrow infiltration of plasmoc ytes. Family studies revealed a high IgM level in one of the patient's daughters.
In the period from May, 1973 to April, 1974, one hundred patients were trea ted for incomple te abortion at the ]ahanshah Saleh Hospital in Tehran, Iran. Patients admitted to th e hospital were from 4 to 28 weeks' gestation and were routinely administered analgestics before the abortion was completed by D&C. The D&C took about 10 minutes and the patient was usually able to go home that same day: Twenty-four women (24 .0%) experienced complicatio n(s) including blood loss, fever requiring antibiotic treatment, and pelvic infection.
A case of Gille de la Tourett's syndrome is reported and discussed 111 the light of conflicting views on the aetiology of the condition. It is hypothesized that if Tourette's syndrome is to be considered as a sort of reaction against adaption to an unhealthy environment, this reaction and its continuity can be attributed to permanent eNS damage (Probably in the area of corpora striata) beginning in childhood. Treatment with haloperidol is suggested as a most effective method of symptomatic treatment.
Serum level and 24hr urinary excretion pattern of potassium have been studied in 104 healthy women, aged 18-44 years, using combined • oral contraceptives for a period of 3-48 months, and results h av e been compared with those obtained from 21 healthy controls of the same clinic. aged 19-40 years, using IUD. There was no sign ificant change observed in s erum potassium level, but 24hr urinary excretion pattern of potassium decreased significantly in 90% of the individuals equivalent to 2. &- 78 . 3% of the mean control, possibly due to a retention of potas sium in the cells.
Three differentes continous cell lines (Am 57. Hela • Vero) and primary cell culture of human embryo kidney
are compared with regard to their .susceptibility for Isolation of mumps v i r u s from saliva and cerebrospinal fluid. For this purFose the Vero cell line appeared to be more suitable among the studied cell systems regarding the following reasons: it allows the highest pourcentage of mumps virus i s ol ation . The cytopathic effect caused by mumps virus occurs comparatively rapidly in this cell culture . • This cytopathic effect is typical enough to allow for a preliminary diagnosis of mumps virus.
The presentation treatment and postoperative progress of two patients with pearly intraspinal eptdermcids is described. In one of the patients the tumour recurred after the first removal. necessitating a second operation. Despite serious distur bances of gait both patients improved following surgery. The literature in respect of these tumours. is reviewed
In a preliminary experiment. the protective effects of ' peritoneal macrophages was shown by transferring macroph. ages fr-om adult mice to newborn and to 7 and 14 days old mice. It suckling mice from intraperitoneal infection with MCMV by reducing the mortality rate from 100% to 27%.was demontrated that such transplentatton protect
A case of sickle cell Hb D disease IS reported in young Iranian male. the father of whom carried an AS sickle cell trait and the mother an AD trait. This disease was diagnosed by Hb electrophoresis. agar gel electrophoresis sickling and solubility tests. This is the first case of sickle cell HB D disease reported in IRAN.
Nine lung hydatid cyst fluid of Echinococcus granulosus species from man were analysed by electrophoresis. immunoelectrophoresis and biochemical tests. In addition respective sera of the- host were analysed for comparison. Analysis revealed striking similarities in celfulose acetate and agarose gel electrophoretic and immunoelectro phoretic Patterns of proteins from hydatid cyst fluid and the serum of the respective hosts. It is presumed that serum proteins ( albumins and globulins) occur in hydatid cyst fluid. but in small amount than in the host serum. and we believe that the host proteins can penetrate the membranes of the hydatid cyst.
